EuCheMS Invites – Science: How Close to Open?

On the occasion of the Open Science Conference organised by the Dutch Presidency of the Council of the EU, EuCheMS is organising the workshop Science: How Close to Open?, taking place in Amsterdam on 5 April.

This event will look into the present and future of intellectual property boundaries in chemistry research and will debate questions such as:

• Which model for peer-review publishing?
• Who owns research data and how to share it?
• Which approach is better for creating innovative products and services?

Together with researchers, publishers, and EU and government officials we hope to build bridges between these different actors and to provide some answers to these questions.

Ausschreibung: SCG-FH Award 2016

Die ILMAC setzt als Fachmesse für Labor- und Prozesstechnologie im Bereich Chemie stark auf industrienahe Innovationen und Anwendungen. Fachhochschulen fokussieren sich in der Ausbildung wie in der Forschung & Entwicklung speziell auf diese Aspekte. Der im 2013 eingeführt SCG FH-Award wird zum zweiten Mal ausgeschrieben und im Rahmen der ILMAC 2016 prämiert. Alle Projekte werden am Gemeinschaftsstand der Fachhochschulen und der SCG ausgestellt und die Siegerprojekte zusätzlich im ILMAC-Forum präsentiert.

Zulassungs- und Prämierungskriterien

• Zum SCG FH-Award zugelassen sind alle Dozierenden einer der folgenden Schweizer Fachhochschulen:
  • FHNW: Hochschule für Life Sciences
  • ZHAW: Institut für Chemie und Biologische Chemie und Institut für Biotechnologie
  • HES-SO: Institut für Chemische Technologie ChemTech, Freiburg und Institut für Life Technologies an der HES-SO Valais//Wallis;
• Es können nur Projekte eingegeben werden, die in Zusammenarbeit mit einem Industriepartner durchgeführt wurden;
• Prämierungskriterien: «Innovation & Anwendung». Das angemeldete Projekt setzt auf Innovation und deren praktische Anwendung und Umsetzung beim Industriepartner. Das Projekt muss in einem der drei folgenden Themenbereiche angesiedelt sein:
  • Analytik und Food Science. Entwicklung allgemeiner Analysetechniken und Anwendungsmethoden für die Lebensmittelbranche.
  • Biotechnologie und Bioanalytik. Entwicklung von Geräten und Methoden für Anwendungen im Bereich Biotechnologie, Diagnostik und Medizin.
  • Prozess- und Verfahrenstechnik. Chemische oder biochemische Anwendungen in den Bereichen Prozess- und Verfahrenstechnik.
    
    

Termine und Dokumentation, Beurteilung

• Projekte für den SCG FH-Award 2016 müssen bis 17.06.16 eingereicht werden.
• Die Dokumentation des angemeldeten Projektes muss den Kriterien auf dieser Ausschreibung entsprechen. Andere Kriterien werden nicht berücksichtigt.
• Die Beurteilung des Projektes erfolgt durch eine unabhängige Jury, die sich aus drei Vertretern der Division Industrielle und Angewandte Chemie (DIAC) der SCG, je einem Vertreter der drei Fachhochschulen, einem Vertreter der Schweizerischen Gesellschaft der Verfahrens- und Chemieingenieur/innen (SGVC) und einem Vertreter des Schweizerischen Verbandes diplomierter Chemiker FH (SVC) zusammensetzt. Diese legen auch die Beurteilungskriterien fest.
• In einer Sitzung im Juli 2016 beurteilt die Jury die eingegangenen Projekte und prämiert die drei besten Projekte in jedem der drei Themenbereiche sowie die drei besten Projekte über alle Themenbereiche hinweg.
• Die Preisträger werden persönlich über ihre Prämierung informiert.

Für die Wirksamkeit des SCS FH-Awards bedarf es einer repräsentativen Anzahl von Eingaben. Der Veranstalter, die SCG, behält sich deshalb das Recht vor, bei ungenügender Teilnahme den Award nicht durchzuführen. In diesem Fall werden die Award-Angemeldeten rechtzeitig darüber informiert.
Über die Beurteilungen wird keine Korrespondenz geführt.

Prämierung

Alle Teilnehmer erhalten die Gelegenheit, ihr Projekt an der ILMAC 2016 am Stand der Fachhochschulen in der Halle 1.1 für die gesamte Dauer der Messe mit einem Poster zu präsentieren. Weiter werden alle eingereichten Projekte im Heft 9/2016 der CHIMIA mit einem einseitigen Projektbeschrieb veröffentlicht.

Je die drei besten Projekte pro Themenbereich werden vom 21. bis 23. September in einem täglichen Seminar von 10.00-11.00h im ILMAC-Forum vorgestellt. Präsentationszeit pro Projekt: 20 Minuten.

Projekteingabe für den SCG FH-Award

Die folgenden Eingaben müssen bis spätestens Freitag 17. Juni 2016 im PDF-Format bei der SCG eingereicht werden ():

• Nominationsbrief mit allen Kontaktdaten und gewähltes Thema
• Projektbeschrieb (max. drei A4-Seiten)
• Einseitiger Projektbeschrieb für die Veröffentlichung in der CHIMIA (siehe auch „Instruction to Authors“ für CHIMIA-Artikel)
• Mindestens ein Begleitbrief des Industriepartners
• Allfällige Anhänge mit weiterführenden Informationen

ChemChina cash offer to acquire Syngenta at a value of 
over US$ 43 billion

Syngenta today announced that ChemChina has offered to acquire the company at US$ 465 per ordinary share plus a special dividend of CHF 5 to be paid conditional upon and prior to closing. The offer is equivalent to a Swiss franc value of CHF 480 per share1. Syngenta shareholders will in addition receive the proposed ordinary dividend of CHF 11 in May 2016. It is planned to make a facility available for the conversion of US dollar sales proceeds into Swiss francs on closing.

Distinguished Industrial Award

2015: Dr. Jürg Zimmermann, Novartis Pharma AG for the ground breaking discovery of protein kinase inhibitors, which had a tremendous impact on the research and therapy of cancer and other diseases. The discovery and development of Imatinib (Gleevec) has revolutionized the therapy of certain forms of leukemia, and also had a tremendous impact on research projects both in industry and academia.

2014: Dr. Hans-Ulrich Blaser, for his outstanding contributions to the development of highly selective and efficient catalysts for the industrial production of bioactive chiral compounds and for the leading role he played in asymmetric catalysis in both industry and academia.

2013: Prof. Klaus Müller, F. Hoffmann-La Roche AG, Basel and ETH Zürich, for pioneering a number of important and crucial scientific initiatives both in academia and industry and most importantly for his early pioneering in ensuring quality academic-industry relations. 

Senior Industrial Award

2015: Dr. Michelangelo Scalone, F. Hoffmann La Roche, for his outstanding contributions to the design of new, short and cost-efficient syntheses for many development projects by applying asymmetric catalytic reactions, and for his longtime success and expertise in leading the Center of Excellence Catalysis at Roche.

2014: Dr. Werner Neidhart, F. Hoffmann La Roche, for his contributions to medicinal chemistry and the creation of multiple candidate drugs, particularly Endothelin antagonists Avosentan and Clazosentan and the marketed Bosentan/Tracleer. 

2013: Dr. Ian Lewis, Novartis Institutes of Biomedical Research, Basel, for the design and synthesis of SOM230/Pasireotide (Signifor®), as the first pituitary directed medical therapy for Cushing’s disease approved by EMEA and FDA in 2012 and
PD Dr. Werner Bonrath, DSM Nutritional Products, Basel, for his contributions in the fields of Vitamins, Carotenoids and Flavor and Fragrances, always related to the application of new catalytic processes which can be industrialized.

Industrial Award

2015: Dr. Dietmar Hüglin, BASF Schweiz AG, for his contribution in developing new ingredients for consumer product markets and specifically for the discovery, research & development of cosmetic UV absorbers combining chemistry with nano-technology. These innovations are setting currently the global standards in high performance photo-protection of human skin.

2014: Dr. Andreas Natsch, Givaudan Schweiz AG, for his thorough investigation into the chemistry, biochemistry and microbiology of axilla malodor, culminating in the suppression of malodor causing processes and in the development of bacterial fragrance release from new families of odorant precursors and
Dr. Wolfgang Jahnke, Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research, Basel, for his excellence in developing and applying biomolecular NMR spectro-scopy and fragment-based lead discovery, resulting in crucial contributions to several drug discovery projects.
