Who's Next? Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2015
The Nobel Prize in Chemistry will be announced on October 7, 2015.
The results so far suggest an American chemist in the organic field will win the 2015 Nobel Prize. The top three write-in suggestions are: Antoine Fécant, George M. Whitesides, and Omar M. Yaghi.
Looking at other predictions for the next Nobel Laureates, Thomson Reuters 2015 Citation Laureates for example suggests Carolyn R. Bertozzi, who contributed to bioorthogonal chemistry, or Emmanuelle Charpentier and Jennifer A. Doudna, who developed the CRISPR/cas 9 method for genome editing, have a good chance.

GDCh: Prof. Thisbe K. Lindhorst wird neue Präsidentin

Die derzeitige stellvertretende Präsidentin der Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker (GDCh), Professor Dr. Thisbe K. Lindhorst, Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel, ist vom neuen Vorstand auf seiner konstituierenden Sitzung am 31. August 2015 in Dresden zur zukünftigen Präsidentin der Gesellschaft gewählt worden. Sie tritt ihr Amt am 1. Januar 2016 an und folgt damit Dr. Thomas Geelhaar, Merck KGaA. Die stellvertretenden Präsidenten werden ab diesem Zeitpunkt Professor Dr. Katharina Al-Shamery, Carl von Ossietzky Universität Oldenburg, und Professor Dr. Herwig Buchholz, Merck KGaA, sein. Dr.-Ing. Georg F. L. Wießmeier, Altana AG, wurde erneut zum Schatzmeister bestimmt.
Thisbe Lindhorst, Jahrgang 1962, studierte Chemie an der LMU München und der WWU Münster. Sie promovierte 1991 an der Universität Hamburg. Nach einem Postdoc-Aufenthalt an der UBC in Vancouver habilitierte Lindhorst sich 1998 an der Universität Hamburg und erlangte 1999 die Venia Legendi für Organische Chemie. Sie erhielt Rufe der Universitäten Aachen, Kiel und Marburg und folgte 2000 dem Ruf auf eine C4-Professur an die Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel. Neben Forschungsaufenthalten an den Universitäten Ottawa (Kanada) und Orléans (Frankreich) nahm die Professorin für Organische und Biologische Chemie in Kiel über Jahre die Position der geschäftsführenden Direktorin und der Sektionsvorsitzenden Chemie wahr.
Lindhorst, die der GDCh seit über zwanzig Jahren angehört, ist seit 2008 Vorsitzende des GDCh-Ortsverbands Kiel, war von 2008 bis 2011 stellvertretende Vorsitzende der Liebig-Vereinigung für Organische Chemie und war von 2011 bis 2014 stellvertretende Vorsitzende des Arbeitskreises Chancengleichheit in der Chemie (AKCC). Darüber hinaus gehört sie seit 2010 dem Kuratorium der GDCh-Mitglieder-Zeitschrift Nachrichten aus der Chemie an.
2011 wurde Lindhorst in den Vorstand der GDCh für die Amtsperiode 2012 bis 2015 gewählt, wo sie seit 2015 das Amt der Vizepräsidentin bekleidet. Nach der Wiederwahl in den Vorstand für die Amtsperiode 2016 bis 2019, wählte sie der neue Vorstand auf seiner konstituierenden Sitzung zur Präsidentin für die Jahre 2016 und 2017. Ihre Amtszeit stellt Lindhorst unter das Motto „ Wertedenken für die Chemie“. Sie wird sich dafür einsetzen, dass Chemikerinnen und Chemiker eine verständliche Sprache finden, um die Wichtigkeit der Chemie und die Faszination an ihrer Wissenschaft der Gesellschaft zu vermitteln. Sie möchte bewirken, dass die GDCh und ihre Mitglieder in einen Dialog mit der Gesellschaft treten, Stellung auch zu schwierigen Themen beziehen und mit den Erkenntnissen der Chemie die Gesellschaft bereichern.
Neben ihrem Engagement in der GDCh ist Lindhorst seit 2008 DFG-Fachkollegiatin und Begründerin der Reihe „Wertedenken – Denkenswertes. Zur Zukunft der Universität“. Seit 2013 ist sie Mitglied im Hochschulrat der Universität Bielefeld und im Wissenschaftlichen Beirat des Leibniz-Instituts für Pflanzenbiochemie in Halle. Außerdem ist sie Fachbeiratsmitglied des Max-Planck-Institut für Kolloid- und Grenzflächenforschung und Kuratoriumsmitglied der Karl Heinz Beckurts-Stiftung.

With more than 520 scientific contributions the SCS Fall Meeting offered again a fantastic possibility to meet experts and specialists and to discuss about their latest research. Maurice Campagna elected as President of the Swiss Academies of Arts and Sciences
Maurice Campagna was elected as new President of the Swiss Academies of Arts and Sciences by their Delegate Assembly. In this capacity and elected for four years, he succeeds Thierry Courvoisier from 1 January 2016. With his broad-based experience in academic and entrepreneurial issues, Maurice Campagna is expected to realise an enhanced and interdisciplinary cooperation among the Swiss Academies of Arts and Sciences.
