SCNAT Annual Report 2019
SCNAT has published its annual report 2019.
Big topics are still the crisis of biodiversity and the global climate change. Due to the fact that these two topics have much in common there is no point in playing one off against another. In fact, science must help finding a solution and participate start a dialog with the main actors.

Die Wissenschaft unterstützt den Bund in der Corona-Krise
Der Bund setzt eine wissenschaftliche Task-Force ein, um die Corona-Krise in der Schweiz zu bewältigen. Die Swiss National Covid-19 Task Force unterstützt Politik und Behörden mit Expertise und erarbeitet Entscheidungsgrundlagen. Zudem identifiziert sie Forschungsthemen, bei denen die Schweizer Wissenschaft rasch zum Verständnis und zur Bekämpfung des Coronavirus beitragen kann. Die Task-Force setzt sich aus ausgewiesenen Expertinnen und Experten der Schweizer Forschungsinstitutionen und Hochschulen zusammen. Marcel Tanner, Präsident ad interim der Akademien der Wissenschaften Schweiz und Präsident der SCNAT, ist Mitglied des Beirats und leitet die Fachgruppe Public Health. Weiter
Spannungsfeld zwischen Klimawandel und Biodiversität
Die Biodiversitätskrise und der Klimawandel haben vieles gemeinsam. Sie gegeneinander auszuspielen, macht aus wissenschaftlicher Sicht wenig Sinn. Die Wissenschaft muss dagegen mehr Teil der Lösungsfindung werden und mit den verschiedenen Akteurinnen und Akteuren in den Dialog treten. SCNAT-Präsident Marcel Tanner erhält Ehrendoktor der Universität Zürich
Die Vetsuisse-Fakultät der Universität Zürich verleiht dem Präsidenten der SCNAT und Präsidenten a.i. der Akademien der Wissenschaften Schweiz sowie emeritierten Direktor des Schweizerischen Tropen- und Public-Health-Instituts einen Ehrendoktor. Sie würdigt seinen Einsatz für die Gesundheit von Mensch und Tier speziell in Ländern des globalen Südens. Der Epidemiologe gehört zu den profiliertesten Gesundheitsexperten der Schweiz. Seine Beiträge zur globalen Gesundheit, Infektionsbiologie und Malariaforschung und zur Stärkung von Gesundheitssystemen in Afrika und Asien machten ihn weit über die Landesgrenzen hinaus bekannt. Fabian Käser wird neuer Leiter der KFPE
Der Sozialanthropologe Fabian Käser leitet ab Mai 2020 die Kommission für Forschungspartnerschaften mit Entwicklungsländern (KFPE) der SCNAT. Er übernimmt die Funktion von Jon-Andri Lys, der pensioniert wird. Käser doktorierte an der Universität Bern über die nachhaltige Gestaltung von Ernährungssystemen. Im Rahmen des r4d-Programms der Direktion für Entwicklung und Zusammenarbeit (Deza) und des Schweizerischen Nationalfonds arbeitete er dabei in Bolivien und Kenia. Nach seiner Doktorarbeit absolvierte er bei der Deza ein Hochschulpraktikum. Weiter
Neue Präsidentin der Eidgenössischen Nationalpark-Kommission
Der Bundesrat hat Heidi Hanselmann als neue Präsidentin der Eidgenössischen Nationalpark-Kommission (ENPK) gewählt. Die bisherige Regierungsrätin des Kantons St. Gallen tritt ihr Amt am 1. Juni 2020 an. Die ENPK ist der Stiftungsrat der öffentlich-rechtlichen Stiftung Schweizerischer Nationalpark. Sie sorgt für die Erhaltung und Förderung des Nationalparks und sichert das Parkgebiet rechtlich ab. Karin Ammon und Norman Backhaus vertreten die SCNAT in der Kommission. Weiter
Schweizer Wettbewerb für Phänologie- und Saisonalitätsforschung
Die Kommission für Phänologie und Saisonalität der SCNAT zeichnet jährlich eine Arbeiten im Bereich Phänologie- und Saisonalitätsforschung mit bis zu CHF 1000 aus. Der Wettbewerb richtet sich an junge aktive Forscherinnen und Forscher in diesem Bereich. Neu werden auch Arbeiten und Projekte von Medien- und Kulturschaffenden berücksichtigt, die das Forschungsgebiet einem breiteren Publikum zugänglich machen. Anmeldeschluss ist der 15. September 2020. Ein nachhaltiges Ernährungssystem für Europa
Die nachhaltige Gestaltung unserer Ernährungssysteme erfordert eine radikale Transformation von deren komplexen sozialen, wirtschaftlichen und ökologischen Komponenten. Eine einfache Erhöhung der Produktivität reicht nicht aus, um die steigende weltweite Nachfrage nach Lebensmitteln in Zukunft zu befriedigen. Das zeigt ein Bericht des europäischen Akademien-Konsortiums Science Advice for Policy by European Academies (Sapea). Die SCNAT trägt mit Expertise aus ihrem Netzwerk zu den Arbeiten von Sapea bei. EuChemS Secretariat team has grown to three full timers
As of 1 April 2020, EuChemS Secretariat now has for the first time ever three full timers working on supporting the community of chemists in Europe. In just a few years, since the Secretariat has started its work from Brussels, it has grown for a factor of three, which shows how activities of EuChemS have increased since 2011. Due to the current health-crisis situation, all the team members are working remotely until further notice.

Budget for Horizon Europe: no agreements yet
The next seven-year EU budget for Horizon Europe is still being debated. Due to the current world health crisis, the budget had to be revised and a proposal will be released by the European Commission president, Ursula von der Leyen. Indeed, governments currently face national difficulties directly impacting their economic and health system and are preparing for a post-crisis recession, which does not facilitate long-term budget planning.
In the current environment, the European Commission is looking for alternatives. Among them, extending the 2020 budget to 2021 is being discussed: the member states (except for the UK) would pay into the EU budget on the same GDP formula as in 2020. Therefore, research would get the same share in 2021 as it does in 2020. Otherwise, operating on a monthly basis is also a potential option.

ERC 2019 advanced grants results
On 31 March 2020, the European Research Council (ERC) announced the 185 winners of the ERC 2019 advanced grants. In total, 450 million euros will be allocated to the winning researchers. As part of the Horizon 2020 programme, this funding will help strengthen Europe’s knowledge base in all fields of research. According to the ERC Press Release, these new projects are expected to create 1,800 new jobs for post-doctoral fellows, PhD students and other research staff.

Resignation of ERC President M. Ferrari
After three months of Presidency, Mauro Ferrari resigned his position as president of the European Research Council (ERC). M. Ferrari submitted his resignation on 7 April 2020.
In the meantime, one of the ERC´s three Vice-Presidents will assume M. Ferrari’s responsibilities until a new ERC President is selected by a Search Committee that the European Commission will set up.
