IAESTE – Your partner for international exchange
The International Association for the Exchange of Students for Technical Experience (IAESTE) is an organization for the exchange of students at higher education institutions wishing to obtain technical experience abroad. The aim of IAESTE is to provide science & engineering students with training experience abroad that is relevant to their studies and to offer Swiss employers well-qualified and motivated foreign trainees to be a source of cultural enrichment for trainees and their host employers.
The Battery Electrodes and Cells group at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI), led by Dr. Sigita Trabesinger, has been a host for IAESTE internships since several years, providing scientific training experience to exchange students. In the 2019 within the scope of the IAESTE internship, fundamental investigation on the gassing of sodium-ion cells was defined as a project topic. The talented and motivated IAESTE student Chrysi Tsolakidou came from Greece to devote 3 month of her time to new and very challenging topic in sodium-ion batteries, under supervision of Dr. Leiting Zhang. Chrysi has fully committed to the project and made substantial progress understanding gassing processes and stability of interphases in Na-ion batteries, which even resulted in her presenting a poster within 8th SCCER Heat and Electricity Storage Symposium. The main tool for this investigation was the online electrochemical mass spectrometry (OEMS) technique, used to monitor the gas release of the cell in real time. Miss Chrysi’s main task was to learn how to make sodium-ion cells, designed specifically for operando gas analysis and how to interpret the experimental results, in order to shed light on the performance degradation mechanism in sodium batteries.
Dr. Sigita Trabesinger underlines the win-win situation for both parties: “IAESTE Switzerland is doing great job by uniting young, curious students with research laboratories to a mutual benefit.”
Chrysi Tsolakidou from Greece describes her positive internship experience as follows: “My name is Chrysi and I have recently graduated from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (Greece) with a Master’s in Chemical Engineering. After finishing with my studies, I was very keen on finding a new opportunity to work abroad in an international environment and gain professional experience. I got a three-month internship through IAESTE in Switzerland, at PSI and started on September. My project was a comparative research study on the Solid Electrolyte Interface (SEI) stability in both Li-ion and Na-ion batteries. Coming to the end of my internship here, I would say that this experience exceeded any of my expectations. Not only did I expand my knowledge about electrochemistry and batteries in general, but also I had the opportunity to apply this knowledge using experimental methods and new instrumentation technologies. I also learnt how to appropriately interpret and present results and I had the chance to present my work at the 8th Symposium Heat and Electricity Storage Symposium in EMPA, Zurich. Except those, my internship included a lot of travelling during weekends all around Switzerland and I made a lot of new friends (IAESTE interns) from all over the world who inspired me, shared their cultures and made me see the world from a different perspective. It was once in a lifetime experience and I would definitely recommend it to every student!”

16 Weltpremieren am Global Science Film Festival 2019
Zum zweiten Mal organisiert die Plattform Biologie der SCNAT zusammen mit der Science Film Academy das «Global Science Film Festival». Das Festival findet vom 15. bis 17. November 2019 in Bern und Zürich statt. Auf dem Programm stehen Filme zu Themen wie Migration, illegaler Tierhandel, Frauen in der Wissenschaft, Waldbrände, Neurowissenschaften oder Expedition zu Planeten. Das Festival präsentiert 16 Uraufführungen und 2 Schweizer Erstaufführungen. Jeder Film wird mit den Filmschaffenden und Fachleuten aus der Wissenschaft diskutiert. Weiter
Urbane Alpen: Strategien zur Verdichtung von Bergorten
Viele beliebte Gebirgsorte entwickeln sich seit Jahrzehnten weitgehend unkontrolliert durch die Multiplikation archetypischer Chalets. Damit geht zumeist die Erschliessung durch den privaten Autoverkehr einher. Zu diesem Thema organisieren das Alpine Museum der Schweiz und das Forum Landschaft, Alpen, Pärke der SCNAT am 26. November 2019 in Bern die Vernissage zum Buch «Stadtplanung in den Alpen» der Lausanner Architektin Fiona Pia und stellen das partizipative Projekt «Urbane Alpen» vor. Weiter
Schweizer Gletscher schrumpften in nur fünf Jahren um zehn Prozent
Während mehrerer Hitzewellen im Sommer 2019 erreichte die Gletscherschmelze Höchstwerte. Dies führte zu einem weiteren Jahr mit starken Verlusten an Eisvolumen, wie die Expertenkommission für Kryosphären-Messnetze der SCNAT berichtet. Zum Internationalen Tag der Berge am 11. Dezember 2019 berichten Menschen im Alpinen Museum Schweiz in Bern, wie sie in den Bergen Grenzen erforschen, setzen oder überschreiten. Der Nacktwanderer-Fotograf Roshan Adhihetty und der Eremit Bruder Markus erzählen von moralischen und physischen Grenzen, die Biologin Sonja Wipf berichtet von Bergpflanzen, die infolge des Klimawandels in die Höhe vordringen, die Kulturanthropologin Elisa Frank über die Rückkehr der Wölfe und der Historiker Jon Mathieu vom Grenzüberschreiter Alexander von Humboldt. Insekten – geliebt, gehasst, gefährdet
Unsere Beziehung zu Insekten ist ambivalent. Einige können uns gefährlich werden, andere sind eklig oder lästig, dritte einfach nur schön. Die aktuelle Ausgabe des Magazins Hotspot vom Forum Biodiversität der SCNAT betreibt Imagepflege in zweierlei Hinsicht: für die Entomologie als Forschungsgebiet und für die Insekten selber. Denn viele Insektenarten sind gefährdet. Sie drohen, für immer zu verschwinden, bevor wir sie überhaupt entdeckt haben. Weiter
Wie soll sich die Schweizer Weltraumforschung in Zukunft ausrichten?
Das Swiss Committee on Space Research (CSR) der SCNAT legt eine Roadmap für die Weltraumforschung in der Schweiz vor. Diese bietet einen Überblick über die Schweizer Forschungsaktivitäten und gibt Empfehlungen für die Zukunft. So schlägt die CSR unter anderem vor, das Entwicklungsprogramm für zukünftige Weltraummissionen (Prodex) der Europäischen Weltraumagentur (ESA) weiterhin zu unterstützen und an den wissenschaftlichen Programmen der ESA teilzunehmen. In Biodiversität investieren
Finanzierungs- und Investitionsentscheide spielen für die Entwicklung der Biodiversität eine Schlüsselrolle. Doch wie funktioniert das Finanzsystem, und wie wirkt es sich auf Biodiversität, Natur und Landschaft aus? Welche Rolle spielt der Staatshaushalt, welche Anreize setzt er? Die Tagung Swifcob 20 «In Biodiversität investieren» blickt hinter die Kulissen der Finanzwelt und diskutiert, wie die Biodiversität in den Finanzströmen berücksichtigt werden kann, dass dies der Natur zugutekommt. LS2 Annual Meeting 2020: von Zellen, Molekülen und Organismen
Am 13. und 14. Februar 2020 führen Life Sciences Switzerland (LS2) ihr Annual Meeting zum Thema «Cells, Molecules, and Organisms» an der Universität Zürich Irchel durch. Neben den Plenar-Vorträgen von international renommierten Forscherinnen und Forschern finden unter anderem 11 wissenschaftliche Symposien, die öffentliche Podiumsdiskussion «Wie Impfungen schützen» und eine Ausstellung zu den neusten Entwicklungen der Industrie statt. 2. Schweizer Landschaftskongress: Dialog über Grenzen hinweg
Diesen Termin schon jetzt reservieren! Am 19. und 20. Oktober 2020 findet in Lausanne der 2. Schweizer Landschaftskongress zum Thema «Dialog über Grenzen hinweg» statt. Angesprochen sind Grenzen im Raum, aber auch in den Köpfen, zwischen Akteurinnen und Akteuren, Interessen oder Disziplinen. Sie gilt es zu überwinden. Gefragt ist die Zusammenarbeit. Dazu bringt der Landschaftskongress unterschiedliche Disziplinen, Vorstellungen und Wissenssysteme, Staats- und Verwaltungsebenen zusammen. Organisiert wird der Anlass vom Forum Landschaft, Alpen, Pärke der SCNAT gemeinsam mit einer breiten Trägerschaft aus Wissenschaft, Verwaltung und Praxis. Weiter

Cancelled: SCS Spring Meeting 2020
Due to the outbreak of COVID-19 and the latest developments in Switzerland the 2020 SCS Spring Meeting is cancelled. We fully support and comply with the regulations of the Swiss government and the measures taken by employers of our members.

The Section Chemistry and the Environment (SCE)
The SCE represents scientists from all fields of fundamental and applied research in environmental sciences and regulatory experts and acts on their behalf in national and international organizations. The Section’s activities include all research areas related to chemical processes that molecules undergo in the environment and their impact on the environment. It includes atmospheric, aquatic and soil chemistry, and the effect of molecules on living organisms.
Objectives
- Disseminate information through the organization and sponsorship of meetings, seminars, workshops and lectures
- Provide a networking platform for environmental scientists to exchange ideas and expert knowledge between academia, industry and regulatory experts
- Facilitate contact with leading experts in the field
