EuChemS General Assembly 2019 took place in Bucharest
The General Assembly, the Executive Board, and Professional Networks meeting were kindly hosted by EuChemS Member Society the Romanian Chemical Society. The meetings took place at the Politehnica University of Bucharest, Romania on the 3 – 4 October 2019.
This year’s General Assembly saw wide ranging discussions and developments. In the first instance, Floris Rutjes from the Royal Netherlands Chemical Society (KNCV) was elected as EuChemS President-Elect. Eckart Rühl, of the German Bunsen Society for Physical Chemistry was re-elected as EuChemS Treasurer. Two new members of the Executive Board were also elected: Ioannis Katsoyiannis (Association of Greek Chemists) and Rinaldo Poli (French Chemical Society). The new roles will officially begin in January 2020.
The General Assembly also voted in favour of two new Supporting Members: the International Sustainable Chemistry Collaborative Centre (ISC3), and ChemPubSoc Europe.
Discussions also looked at EuChemS’ latest initiatives for the International Year of the Periodic Table (IYPT2019), policy work, communications and internal finances. Plans for events and activities for next year, in light of EuChemS’ 50-year anniversary were also presented, along with a new logo to celebrate the occasion. An ‘All You Want To Ask’ session with free discussion between representatives and the EuChemS secretariat were organised, allowing the sharing of ideas, comments and suggestions for optimising EuChemS’ work.
EuChemS was most pleased to welcome Bonnie Charpentier, President of the American Chemical Society (ACS) to the open session of the General Assembly, where, together with Pilar Goya, EuChemS President, a ‘Chemisty Enterprise Partnership’ was signed. The document reaffirms the commitment of both the ACS and EuChemS to work together to advance the chemical sciences, and to promote chemistry as a way of addressing global challenges, particularly as laid out in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
EuChemS warmly thanks the Romanian Chemical Society for hosting and welcoming all the participants. Commemorative medals of the centenary of the Romanian Chemical Society were handed out to EuChemS Member Society representatives during a dinner.

From Wed, 25.09.2019 to Fri, 27.09.19, during the 2019 ILMAC, the Swiss Chemical Society and SusChem Switzerland organized the first Swiss SusChem Days. Three lunch symposia, two workshops one session with discussion roundtables and an evening session provided a fantastic program on the topic of green & sustainable chemistry. More than 400 participants visited one of the sessions and complimented the high value input the got. Experts from industry and academy gave lectures and answered questions during the networking events or the panel discussion.

CHIMIA will become a Platinum Open Access journal starting January 2020
The Swiss Chemical Society as the publisher of CHIMIA, and the CHIMIA Editorial Board are very pleased to inform you that CHIMIA will become a Platinum Open Access journal from the beginning of 2020.
Platinum Open Access means permanent and free access to published scientific works for readers and no publication fees (i.e. no article publishing charges (APCs)) for authors)
This change will apply to the scientific, peer-reviewed, special topic articles. All articles will be published under the CC_BY license. Authors retain copyright of their work and allow it to be shared and reused provided that it is correctly cited. Readers may download, share or reuse the work, free of charge.

Kavli Prizes 2020: Call for nominations
The Kavli Prize is awarded by The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters for outstanding scientific achievements in Astrophysics, Nanoscience and Neuroscience by an individual. The Kavli Prize for each of the three fields consists of USD 1,000,000, a scroll and a gold medal.
The Kavli Prize in Astrophysics is awarded for outstanding achievement in advancing our knowledge and understanding of the origin, evolution, and properties of the universe, including the fields of cosmology, astrophysics, astronomy, planetary science, solar physics, space science, astrobiology, astronomical and astrophysical instrumentation, and particle astrophysics.
The Kavli Prize in Nanoscience is awarded for outstanding achievement in the science and application of the unique physical, chemical, and biological properties of atomic, molecular, macromolecular, and cellular structures and systems that are manifest in the nanometer scale, including molecular self-assembly, nanomaterials, nanoscale instrumentation, nanobiotechnology, macromolecular synthesis, molecular mechanics, and related topics.
The Kavli Prize in Neuroscience is awarded for outstanding achievement in advancing our knowledge and understanding of the brain and nervous system, including molecular neuroscience, cellular neuroscience, systems neuroscience, neurogenetics, developmental neuroscience, cognitive neuroscience, computational neuroscience, and related facets of the brain and nervous system.
The Kavli Prize is a partnership between The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters, The Kavli Foundation (US) and The Norwegian Ministry of Education and Research.
Call for nominations:
The closing date for nominating candidates is December 1, 2019. The winners will be announced May 27, 2020 and the award ceremony will take place in Oslo, Norway on September 8, 2020.
Nominations for the Kavli Prizes should be submitted to The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters by way of the online nomination form obtained at www.kavliprize.org.
