Prof. Gilles Gasser awarded the Werner Prize 2015

150429 WernerPrize Gasser01On the occasion of the SCS Spring Meeting in Basel on April 24 2015, the SCS president Prof. E. Peter Kündig awarded Prof. Gilles Gasser, University of Zurich, the Werner Prize 2015 for his outstanding contributions in the field of medicinal inorganic chemistry and of inorganic chemical biology.

Prof. Gilles Gasser and his group are currently working on three different but complementary topics, namely Inorganic Chemical Biology, Medicinal Inorganic Chemistry and Medicinal Organometallic Chemistry. All projects undertaken in his group involve the preparation, characterization and utilization of metal complexes for biological or medicinal purposes. The single objective is to understand, identify and/or influence biological processes in living cells using metal-based compounds. Their research therefore lies at the interface between inorganic chemistry, medicinal chemistry, chemical biology and biology. As a consequence, Prof. Gilles Gasser not only hosts chemistry students but also a biology student who jointly works between the Institute of Inorganic Chemistry and the Institute for Molecular Cancer Research at the University of Zurich.

The following topics are at the forefront of their current work:

  • Inorganic Chemical Biology
  • Development of new techniques to fight cancer
  • Development of novel metal-based anticancer drug candidates
  • Development of novel organometallic-based antiparasitic drug candidates

Review and Photos Spring Meeting 2015

More than 220 participants joined the SCS Spring Meeting at University of Basel on April 24, 2015. Five invited speakers and the Werner Prize winner 2015 presented their talks on the topic «The Chemistry of Complex Systems».

In the name of the SCS I like to thank again the invited speakers, Prof. Itamar Willner, University of Jerusalem (ISR), Prof. Stefan Matile, University of Geneva (CHE), Prof. Roeland Nolte, University of Nijmegen, Royal Netherlands Academy of Science (NLD), Prof. David Leigh, University of Manchester (GBR), Prof. Jason Chin, University of Cambridge (GBR) and the Werner Prize Winner 2015, Prof. Gilles Gasser, University of Zurich (CHE), as well as the oganizers, Prof. Thomas R. Ward and his team for thier contributions and excellent work. It was a great pleasure for all of us, from participants to speakers to exhibitors.

50th Anniversary of the Bürgenstock Conference

50 years ago, the first EuCheMS Conference on Stereochemistry was held in Bürgenstock, Switzerland. This conference, founded by André S. Dreiding, University of Zurich, Switzerland, and know universally known as the "Bürgenstock Conference", is internationally renowned for scientific excellence and its relaxed atmosphere. Till 2008, the venue of the conference was Bürgenstock at the lake of Lucerne in Switzerland. Since 2009, the meetings have moved to Brunnen.

SCS Fall Meeting 2015

Icon FM15We are pleased to invite you to the Fall Meeting of the Swiss Chemical Society on September 04, 2015. This year’s SCS Fall Meeting is organized by EPFL in Lausanne in the same locations as in 2013 and 2011.

Visit the SCS Fall Meeting Website

We are looking forward to seeing you in Lausanne.

Prof. Sandrine Gerber               David Spichiger
Fall Meeting Chair                    SCS Executive Director

The SCS Fall Meeting

The Swiss Chemical Society Fall Meeting is the largest annual scientific event in Switzerland with close to 600 contributions. It offers a unique opportunity for graduate students, post-doctoral researchers and scientists of all levels, from both, academia and industry, to share the results of their research projects. It also stimulates the exchange of ideas between all generations of chemists, often creating the seeds for new projects and collaborations.

One of the highlights of this year’s Fall Meeting will be the KGF-SCS Distinguished Investigator Award Lecture, given by Dr. Jürg Zimmermann, Novartis Pharma AG and the Sandmeyer Award Lecture, given by Dr. Stefan Abele from Actelion. The Scientific Program will offer invited and contributed lectures as well as poster presentations in 8 parallel sessions.
