This year’s Day of Life Sciences of the Institute of Chemistry and Biotechnology, which is organised by the Phytopharmacy and Natural Product Group and supported by the Phytochemical Society Europe (PSE) and the Swiss Medical Society for Phytotherapy (SMGP), is dedicated to the Hydoxyanthracene Derivatives – a topic specially selected on the occasion of the 70th birthday of Prof. Beat Meier for honouring his outstanding scientific achievements in phytochemical analysis for the European Pharmacopoeia and the Swiss Pharmacopoeia as well as for various industrial applications.

Hydroxyanthracene derivatives are a pharmacologically interesting class of chemical substances naturally occurring in different botanical species. Compounds of this class act as prodrugs being converted into active metabolites in the gastrointestinal tract, where they exert a motility promoting effect. Several of the plants containing hydroxyanthracene derivatives are the source of recognised herbal drugs such as senna, rhubarb, cascara, aloe and frangula, all of them well known for their long tradition in different medical systems in the treatment of bowel function irregularities. In this function hydroxyanthracene derivatives continue to lend themselves to an important therapeutic option for responding to one of the major health problems linked with modern lifestyle.

The Hydroxyanthracene Derivatives Symposium will feature cuttingedge contributions about analysis, quality, safety and efficacy of this interesting phytochemical substance class. In addition to this, the meeting will provide a platform for dialogue and scientific knowledge transfer for participants from industry, regulatory bodies, academia or education and has the intention to support the future work on monographs for the concerned herbal drugs.

Tackling the Carbon Dioxide Challenge for a Sustainable Future.

Are we - scientists and engineers - ready to deliver CCUS for large scale deployment? What are the challenges and hurdles towards implementation? What are the technical solutions and scientific breakthroughs emerged or about to emerge? We will discuss these questions and many more in an interdisciplinary framework at the 2019 Gordon Research Conference on CCUS (the third of a series), where participants junior and senior will be stimulated by the highly interactive atmosphere typical of the GRCs and inspired by the natural landscape surrounding the conference venue, for the first time in Europe.
Among the specific areas addressed by the conference there will be the scientific breakthroughs in CCUS, the role of CCUS in enabling negative emissions, the systemic aspects of CCUS, and its role in selected industrial sectors.

The Swiss Food Science Meeting (SFSM) is a platform for the scientific exchange of food analysis as well as analysis of food contact materials and cosmetics. Scientists, such as chemists, toxicologists and food engineers who work in industry, food laboratories, universities, for governmental bodies or food control authorities are invited to join the SFSM and to present their latest findings. The organising committee invites for every meeting competent scientists with international reputation to give key note lectures. The plenary sessions are surrounded by a poster session.

The SFSM is organised by a committee with members from the Swiss Society for Food Chemistry SFC and the Association of Swiss Cantonal Chemists ASCC. The first SFSM was held in 2013 followed by meetings in 2015 and 2017. It is planned to realize the next SFSM in 2019 . The place of the meeting is the University of Neuchâtel (Aula des jeunes Rives), a picturesque place by the lake of Neuchâtel, situated at the french-german language border.

Do not hesitate to participate at the next SFSM and learn what currently happens in the wide field of food science and take the opportunity to meet colleagues.

The organising committee hopes to see you in Neuchâtel!

Nanotechnology, personalized medicine and machine learning are future and emerging technologies (FETs) with a tremendous potential to influence the development of innovative materials-enabled health care solutions. However, a careful safety assessment is required to avoid social and economic drawbacks, particularly during the first stages of implementation. This can only be achieved with an open, target-oriented and trans-disciplinary exchange between academia, industry and regulatory bodies.
