Dear Stakeholder & Friends of SusChem,

We would like to inform you of an important development: the SusChem European Technology Platform (ETP) will formally conclude its activities in 2025.

In 2024, SusChem celebrated 20 years of relevance and achievement. These two decades have been marked by strong collaboration between academia and industry, fostering innovation at both national and European levels. Numerous success stories stand as a testament to what our community has achieved together.

Earlier this year, the SusChem Board worked to define a revised strategy to shape the future direction of SusChem. However, it was not possible to establish a sufficient financial basis for the new strategy.

Over the past 20 years, Cefic has been the primary supporter of SusChem, funding dedicated personnel, the website (suschem.org), communication channels and materials, stakeholder events, and thematic studies (e.g., Safe and Sustainable-by-Design and Digital Technologies). Due to internal funding limitations and evolving priorities among its membership, Cefic has decided to discontinue its financial support of the SusChem ETP.

Despite our efforts, no alternative funding could be secured, neither from other SusChem members nor from the European Commission. The SusChem Board, in its last meeting on 26 June 2025, decided by majority vote to discontinue the platform’s European-level operations. The European-level coordination will formally end on 30 September 2025.

What’s Next?

This is not the end of SusChem’s legacy. Under the new format of 'SusChem-NTPs', National Technology Platforms will continue to foster collaboration and sustain the community built over the past two decades.

The National Technology Platforms (NTPs) will remain active and will coordinate their activities going forward under the SusChem-NTPs framework.

This new collaboration model is currently being developed, and more details will be shared soon. If you wish to join this exchange and get connected with your NTP, please contact the interim coordination point at the Austrian NTP:

Closure Communications

The current SusChem website (www.suschem.org) and social media channels will be decommissioned by the end of 2025, in line with contractual obligations. A formal notice of closure will also be published on the website.

On behalf of the SusChem Board, we extend our sincere thanks to all members, national platforms, and stakeholders for their commitment and collaboration over the past 20 years. It has been an honour to serve the SusChem community.

We believe that sustainability in chemistry will continue to grow and ultimately become the standard across both industry and academia.

Warm regards,
The SusChem Europe Board

The Swiss Chemical Society decided already in Spring 2025 to leave the SusChem organization and to stop using the brand SusChem Switzerland. We continue our efforts in the field with our sub-group 'Green & Sustainable Chemistry Network'.
