On 17 July, the mentees of the Basel SCS Mentoring Program met at the Department of Organic Chemistry of the University of Basel to hear different mentors talk about their academic careers. The first talk was by Professor Catherine Housecraft, a recently emigrated professor from the University of Basel, who gave us her perspective on becoming an academic and the different challenges she faced as one of the few female professors at the institution in the 1970s. The next talk was by Professor Malte Oppermann, a relatively new professor from the University of Basel, who showed us his path and taught us some lessons about becoming a professor in recent times. This was followed by a talk from Gloriana Reginato, who works for Basilea in Basel, who talked about her career path and the various challenges she has faced in industry.

The group then went to Roche to meet Andrea Eichelmann, who introduced us to Roche. The mentees then had a presentation from mentor Leslie Fendt, who introduced us to her career path after her PhD in chemistry and showed us different career opportunities at Roche outside of R&D. Next, they had a presentation from Jean-Yves Wach, who talked about his career path and his experiences at Roche as a chemist in R&D. Afterwards, the group went to Vito's in Basel for drinks, pizza and further discussions, where also the mentor Mathias Wipf, CEO of Momm Diagnostics, joined us.

SCS Mentoring Program

The program supports the personal and professional development of Swiss university students by providing guidance, advice, and feedback from senior professionals of industry, academia, higher education, and governmental agencies in various functions.
Different formats of training and exchange are offered, including round tables and workshops, lectures, company or lab visits, and social activities.

The classes run from September to June, include a kick-off event, at least two activities during the terms, and a closing event. There is a maximum of 20 mentees per class, with a mentor to mentees ratio of about one to three.

The application for the next class, running from September 2024 to June 2025 is open until August 15, 2024. Please visit the website for more information and the application form.
