Young Chemists Summit 2020
Their first conference for young chemists in Austria, the Young Chemists Summit, will be held from the 21st until the 23rd of September 2020 online. Besides plenary lectures, poster sessions and oral presentations from PhD students, they are also organizing soft and hard-skill workshops, a panel discussion from alumni and an industry speed dating, where participants can get in contact with local industry partners.
With this congress they want to bridge the gap between students, industry and universities. In their numerous events and successful collaborations with industrial partners over the last years, they noticed the importance and growing interest in this active exchange.
Free registration for the event, participation at the hubs, workshops and the virtual excursions. FAQ can be found here.

Delegate Assembly 2020 of the European Young Chemists’ Network (EYCN)
The 15th Delegate Assembly (DA) of the European Young Chemists’ Network (EYCN) took place in Sitges, Spain, on January 26–29, 2020 and it was organized in collaboration with the Catalan Chemical Society. Two Delegates of the Swiss Chemical Society, namely Dr. Jovana V. Milić (EPFL) and Amin Hodaei (EPFL), represented the Swiss Young Chemists’ Association (SYCA) at the event.
During the DA, EYCN Delegates and board members presented their activities and discussed future plans. Moreover, this event hosted a number of special guests, including Prof. Javier García Martínez, the President-Elect of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC), Prof. Pilar Goya Laza, the President of the European Chemical Society (EuChemS), and Dr. Haymo Ross, the Editor-in-Chief of Chemistry—A European Journal. While Prof. Javier García Martínez talked about the future perspectives in chemical sciences, Prof. Pilar Goya Laza shared insights on the role and activities of EuChemS, and Dr. Haymo Ross discussed the publishing metrics.
Dr. Jovana V. Milić and Amin Hodaei participated in the activities of the EYCN with their roles as the Leader of the Networks team and member of the Global Connections team, respectively. The Networks team is dedicated to increasing the impact of the EYCN through its activities and international partnerships with academia, industry, and governmental bodies, while connecting and supporting young chemists. The Global Connections team, however, focuses on global outreach to expand the contact of the EYCN outside of Europe. Moreover, Dr. Jovana V. Milić chaired an interactive session on Science Policy that provided a forum for the delegates to express their view on the European policy and discuss strategies to jointly address some of the ongoing concerns.
The 15th DA also involved the elections for the next DA and the European Young Chemists’ Meeting (EYCheM) in 2021 and the Swiss Chemical Society was elected to host the event in Fribourg, Switzerland. The SYCA will thereby organize this event in collaboration with the EYCN, which will provide a great opportunity for the Swiss Chemical Society that we look forward to.

Call for nominations: 2020 IUPAC-Solvay International Young Chemist award
The IUPAC-SOLVAY International Award for Young Chemists is intended to encourage outstanding young research scientists at the beginning of their careers. The awards are given for the most outstanding Ph.D. theses in the general area of the chemical sciences, as described in a 1000-word essay. The award is generously sponsored by Solvay.
In 2020 IUPAC will award up to five prizes. Each prize will consist of USD 1000 cash and travel expenses to the 2021 IUPAC Congress in Montréal (13-20 Aug 2021; see iupac2021.org). In keeping with IUPAC’s status as a global organization, efforts will be made to ensure fair geographic distribution of prizes.
The awards will be presented at the 2021 IUPAC Congress. Each awardee will be invited to present a poster on his/her research and to participate in a plenary award session, and is expected to submit a review article for publication in Pure and Applied Chemistry.
